The Big Christmas Present: What Makes It Worth It?
Share
There are Christmas presents and then there is the big Christmas present. The one parents or grandparents start thinking about well before December. You compare things, research where it can be bought, look at sizes, wonder where it will live, think about where it will be hidden before Christmas and ask somebody else what they think. And when it's a considered purchase, there's usually another question in the back of your mind:
Will they still be interested in it once Christmas is over?
Think past Christmas morning
Opening something new is exciting but Christmas morning is one day. If you're investing in a bigger gift, the real value comes afterwards:
- Can they find another way to play with it?
- Can it change when they change their mind?
- Could siblings use it differently?
- Could siblings play on it together?
- Will it still make sense when the latest obsession has moved on?
Those are useful questions because children rarely stay interested in exactly the same thing for very long. As we said last week, one month it's dinosaurs, the next it's space and the next month could be anything.
Start with your child
When you're comparing Funphix kits, it's easy to go straight to size and piece count and of course they matter, but they're not really the best place to begin. Think about your child first.
- Are they happiest climbing and moving?
- Do they build dens out of absolutely everything?
- Do they love making things?
- Will brothers, sisters or friends usually be joining in?
And think about your home too.
- Where will you use it?
- How much space do you have?
- Would a smaller starting point fit family life better than one of the biggest kits?
- Do you want to play indoors or outdoors, or both?
The best choice will be the one they're most likely to keep coming back to.
Leave room for what comes next
This is where modularity makes a difference. Funphix can be built, played with, taken apart and built differently. It can be used indoors and outdoors too. All our Funphix kits work together, families can add to the system later if they want more building possibilities. You don't need to buy for every future idea on day one.
