What Will They Be Into Next?

Children can become experts in something remarkably quickly, their capacity to learn is huge. One week it's dinosaurs; then space; then gymnastics; then some new interest everybody else in the family is apparently expected to understand immediately. It's one of the lovely things about childhood when they're always discovering something else. It can also make buying things for them an interesting challenge.

Today's favourite isn't always tomorrow's
We've all bought something because a child was completely obsessed with it. At the time, it felt like the safest choice in the world, but six months later, not so much. The problem isn't that children lose interest it's that their interests move on as they grow and develop. That's why we like play that leaves room for whatever comes next. A Funphix build doesn't have to stay tied to the reason they first enjoyed it, the child who wants to climb everything today might be building a shop underneath it next month, the dinosaur headquarters could become a space station, then a car, followed by an airplane and then into a café. And then something with a very complicated purpose nobody has successfully explained. The Funphix pieces stay the same but the idea doesn't have to.

Growing doesn't always mean getting bigger
When we talk about Funphix growing with children, it isn't only about adding more pieces. The way children use the same kit can change too. At first, they might choose what they want to make while an adult helps with the building. Later, they may want to plan more of it themselves and then they may plan and build it all by themselves. They start suggesting changes, working out where things should go and becoming increasingly certain that their idea is better than yours. They're probably right. And if their builds do get bigger as they grow, the Funphix system can be expanded later too. You can buy extra parts to go with any Funphix kit.
You don't have to predict the next craze
Parents are expected to know quite a lot. Fortunately, predicting what a child will be fascinated by next spring doesn't need to be one of those things. That's the useful part of choosing something open-ended and modular as it can change when they do.
